
Hans' Professional Contributions
Dr. Hansraj J. Bajaria, president and founder of Multiface, Inc., was a world class engineer, educator, and consultant, recognized worldwide for solving quality related problems.
Hans graduated with a B.S. in both Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering from Gujarat University in India. Once in the US, he received a M.S. in Mechanical Engineering Engineering from North Dakota State University. Michigan Technological University awarded him a Ph.D. in Engineering Mechanics in 1972. Dr. Bajaria was an associate professor of engineering at Lawrence Technological University in Southfield, Michigan. He began his extensive industrial career as a quality and reliability engineer with Rockwell International in Troy, Michigan. He then held positions as a product design engineer for Ford Motor Company in Dearborn, Michigan, and a design engineer with J.B. Webb Company in Farmington Hills, Michigan.
In 1978, Hans created his own consulting firm, Multiface, Inc. with his own practice in Garden City. Through his consulting firm, Dr. Bajaria worked with several organizations including Allen-Bradley, Allied-Signal, DaimlerChrysler, Federal Mogul, Ford, General Motors, Gleason Works, GTE, Johnson & Johnson, Kelsey=Hayes, Parker Hannifin, Samsung, Steelcase, Thermodisc, TRW, 3M, Union Camp, and Whirlpool. His experience covers the automotive, aerospace, alliance, food, drug, and paper industries. He also achieved international prestige through pursuits extending into India, Australia, Russia, Korea, South America, and the Middle East.
Among his most active memberships were the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the American Society of Quality (ASQ) (vice president of professional development, 1980-82), the American Society of Engineers of Indian Origin (ASEI) (founding member, 1983, Chairman of the National Board, 1984, President of the Michigan Chapter, 1995), the Society of Reliability Engineers (SRE), the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE), the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME), and the Engineering Society of Detroit (ESD). Hans served as a chair of ASQ Detroit Section (1978-79) and was Education Chair of ASQ Automotive Divison (1979-80) and Regional Councilor for the ASQ Reliability Division (1979-2001).
Dr. Bajaria had received numerous awards and recognitions during his active professional career. Among them are Rockwell International Engineer of the Year (1976), ASQ Greater Detroit Section Man of the Year (1980), the Engineering Society of Detroit Gold Award (1982), the ASQ Reliability Division Austin Bonis award (1994), the ASQ Grant Award (1994), the ASQ Midwest Conference Board Oakley Award (1996), and the ASQ George Edwards Medal (2000). In 1991, he co-authored a book on Statistical Problem Solving, which summarized his thoughts on issues such as quality, reliability, design of experiments, management, and decision making. Hans was known as a unique businessman and leader due to his use of humor in his teachings and practice. His presentations were always well attended and he gained respect from professional and personal communities all over the world. Not only was he deeply committed to excellence in his profession, but to giving back to quality and engineering communities in the US and India. He was also well recognized as a professional in the Asian Indian community of Michigan. His impact in the quality world lives on through colleagues' fond memories and the Dr. Hans Bajaria Problem Solving Award which was established by the ASEI-Michigan chapter in 2002.
